Ube Machinery Corporation Establishes a Chinese Corporation

Ube Machinery Corporation, Ltd., (Toshio Wakabayashi, company president), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ube Industries, Ltd., (Kazumasa Tsunemi, company president) is establishing Ube Machinery (Shanghai) Limited on July 1, 2001, using independent capital (capital: 170,000,000 yen, corporate office: Shanghai, China).

With its participation in the World Trade Organization (WTO), China is expected to see large growth in its market in the future. By establishing a local company, UBE plans to build upon the manufacturing strength and delivery experience to further boost its processing performance and cost competitiveness and expand its market share in China.

As a Chinese company, Ube (Shanghai) Ltd. will engage in the import and sale of manufacturing equipment such as die-casting machines, injection-molding machines, extrusion presses, and vertical mills while continuing its after-service business. It will also add businesses such as local manufacturing, OEM, and provision of technology to develop an integrated China-based machinery business that extends from manufacturing and sales to after-service care. In addition, parts procured in China will reimported to Japanese works as one means of reducing production costs.

The manufacturing facility will be completed in the middle of 2001 and production will start from 2002. In addition, marketing and after-service branches will be opened in Tianjin, Shenzhen, and Chongqing in order to create a network fully capable of providing service to domestic customers as well as to Japanese, European, and North American companies setting up operations in China.

Ube's die casting machines, extrusion presses, large injection molding machines, and vertical mills hold a major share of the world market. Since 1996, the American subsidiary Ube Machinery Inc. (UMI), with its corporate office in Michigan (Mitsuhiro Kawamura, company president), has been performing local production of die casting machines and injection molding machines. The establishment of a locally owned company in China will follow UMI as the second line according to the corporate strategy of creating a world-wide three-pole system. The company expects to achieve sales of 4 billion yen and a staff of approximately 40 employees by 2003.
