Giant salvage vessel that helped build the Kosan
Bridge docks at the Ube Machinery wharf for the first
time in 20 years
A giant salvage vessel measuring 107 meters in
length, 49 meters beam, and with a 120-meter tall
crane, docked at the Ube Machine wharf to transport
caissons weighing between 1400 and 2000 tons apiece.

Ube Machinery (Shanghai), Limited opens its doors
On July 1, 2001, our local subsidiary in China, Ube
Machinery (Shanghai), Limited, opened for business.
The establishment of this subsidiary is the second
step in the division's "tripod" global
business strategy, following the establishment of UMI
in the United States. Simultaneously with the
establishment, Ube Industries Machinery Sales Ltd.
was absorbed into Ube Machinery, to be continued by
ourselves and Ube Machinery (Shanghai).

The Ube Machinery plant (Ube City, Yamaguchi
Prefecture) offered a tour of the rollerless
conveyor: the world's largest, capable of
transporting 5,000 tons per hour. About 80 users from
40 firms participated in the demonstration. The new
conveyor offers advantages including low noise, no
particulate generation, and reduced drive energy
consumption, and will be delivered in the summer of
2001 to a thermal power station for coal transport.
Ube Machinery offers a range of conveyors with
capacities from 20 to 5,000 tons/hour.

It was announced that Ube Machinery (Shanghai),
Limited would be established as an independent
subsidiary on July 1, 2001, with a capitalization of
JY170 million. The establishment of a local
subsidiary in China, viewed as the most attractive
high-growth prospect, is expected to expand our
market presence there. Plant construction will be
completed in fiscal 2001, with production to start
the following year. Sales and service offices will be
opened in Tianjin, Shenzhen and Chongqing,
establishing a service stance capable of fully
meeting the needs of Chinese customers as well as
European and Japanese firms entering China. See the

Ube Industries will spin off the Aluminum Wheels
Division of Ube Machinery as an independent
corporation, folding it into Ube Automotive, Ltd. as
of April 1, 2001, with a capitalization (including
reserves) of ?560 million, and head office in
Minato-ku, Tokyo. The move will integrate the
existing U-MOLD Co., Ltd. (Yamaguchi Prefecture;
annual capacity 2.4 million wheels) and Ube
Automotive North America Mason Plant Inc. (formally
A-Mold Corp. of Ohio, America; annual capacity 1.4
million wheels) with Ube Automotive North America
Sarnia Plant Inc., which was established in June 2000
and is currently constructing a plant (Ontario,
Canada; annual capacity 2.25 million wheels). See the

Ube Machinery participated in the Japan Die Casting
Congress and Exposition (sponsored by the Japan
Diecasting Association) in Yokohama City, welcoming a
host of visitors to our booth.
August 22, 2000
A ceremony was held to mark the start of construction
for our new aluminum wheel plant in Sarnia, Ontario,
with a planned annual capacity 2.25 million wheels.
First-phase construction will bring capacity to 1.28
million wheels in December 2001, and second-phase
construction to reach full capacity is scheduled to
be complete in September 2003. After the completion
of the plan, total group production capacity for
aluminum wheels will reach 6 million, together with
the existing two plants in the US and Japan.

Ube Machinery exhibits at NPE2000, the largest
plastics show in America, held in Chicago. The latest
molding technology was displayed and demonstrated,
centered on the MD1400S III fully-electric injection
molding machine, the world's largest. A large number
of people visited the Ube Machinery booth.
